Your Knee Can Handle
More Than You Think.
Knee pain on the descent of Pilot Butte, grinding through moguls at Mt. Bachelor, or aching after a pickleball tournament — it doesn't have to be your new normal. Most knee pain has a fixable cause. We find it.
Does This Sound Like You?
Knee pain affects people differently depending on what they do. We treat both the injury and the athlete.
Pain That Shows Up When You Push It
You hike the Cascades, run the Deschutes River Trail, ski at Bachelor, or ride the Bend trail system — and your knee has become the thing that limits every big day out. It holds up fine on flat ground but flares on descents, long efforts, or the day after.
- Knee pain on downhill hiking that ruins the second half of the day
- Pain on the outside of the knee after long runs or bike rides
- Swelling or aching after big ski days that takes days to settle
- Knee that feels unstable or gives way on technical terrain
- Afraid to commit to events or trips because your knee might not hold up
Knee Pain That Limits Your Game
Pickleball, basketball, tennis, or the gym — your knee flares with lateral movement, loading, or impact. You're fine during, but paying for it the next morning. Or you had an acute injury (ACL, meniscus) and want to return to sport stronger than before.
- Pain with cutting, pivoting, or lateral movements on the court
- Clicking or grinding in the knee that's getting louder over time
- Knee that swells after activity and takes days to recover
- Post-surgical knee that stalled out after initial physical therapy
- Patellar pain that flares with stairs, squatting, or kneeling
Why Your Knee Keeps Flaring Up
The knee gets blamed for a problem it usually didn't cause. Here's what's actually happening.
The Knee Is the Victim — Not the Criminal
Most knee pain is driven by what's happening above and below it. Weak hips let the knee collapse inward under load. Stiff ankles change how forces travel up the leg. The knee absorbs the stress — and eventually gives out. Treating just the knee without addressing hip and ankle mechanics is why it keeps coming back.
Rest Doesn't Fix Tendons or Cartilage — Loading Does
Tendons, cartilage, and the meniscus respond to load — not rest. Extended rest leads to tissue deconditioning, reduced load tolerance, and a knee that feels worse when you try to return to activity. The right progressive loading program is what drives real healing.
You Haven't Built Back to the Demands of Your Sport
Generic PT gets you to "functional." But hiking down 3,000 feet of vertical, skiing aggressive terrain, or changing direction on a pickleball court demands more than "functional." Without sport-specific load progressions, you return to activity underprepared — and the knee breaks down again.
Knee Pain We Specialize In
From runner's knee to ACL rehab — we treat the full spectrum of knee conditions with a specific focus on returning Bend's active community to full performance.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Pain under or around the kneecap with running, hiking descents, stairs, or squatting. Almost always a hip strength and patellar tracking problem — highly responsive to targeted physical therapy.
IT Band Syndrome
Sharp pain on the outside of the knee during runs or rides that forces you to stop. A hip loading issue, not a stretching problem. We address the root cause so it stops coming back every training cycle.
Meniscus Tears & Irritation
Pain, swelling, or locking in the knee — often after a twist or from repetitive loading. Many meniscus tears heal well without surgery. We assess the type and guide you through a conservative program that restores full function.
ACL & MCL Sprains and Rehab
From acute sprains to post-surgical ACL reconstruction — we build the comprehensive strength and neuromuscular program needed to return to sport with confidence. Not just cleared to play — ready to compete.
Patellar Tendinopathy
Pain just below the kneecap with jumping, squatting, or heavy lower body training. Tendinopathy needs progressive loading — not rest. We use evidence-based protocols that get you back to full training without flare-ups.
Knee Osteoarthritis
Stiffness, aching, and grinding that gets worse with activity. Arthritis doesn't mean you stop moving — it means you need the right program. Strength training is one of the best treatments for knee OA and we'll show you how to build it safely.
Built Back to the Demands of Your Sport
Getting out of pain is the starting point, not the finish line. We build your knee back to handle descents in the Cascades, aggressive terrain at Mt. Bachelor, and cutting hard on the court — not just walking around the block comfortably.

Frequently Asked
Straight answers about knee pain, physical therapy, and getting back to activity in Bend, Oregon.
Do I need surgery for a meniscus tear or ACL injury?
Not always. Research shows that many meniscus tears — especially degenerative ones — respond just as well to physical therapy as to surgery. ACL injuries can sometimes be managed conservatively depending on the grade and your activity level. We give you an honest assessment and help you weigh your options — we're not here to push PT if surgery is genuinely the better path.
How long does knee physical therapy take?
Most acute issues like runner's knee or IT band syndrome see significant improvement in 6–10 weeks. Post-surgical ACL rehab typically takes 6–12 months to return to high-demand sport. We give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment so you can plan around your season or events.
Can I keep hiking and biking during treatment?
Usually yes — with the right guidance. We'll tell you what distances or terrain to modify, what to watch for, and how to build back progressively. Continuing activity (with appropriate modifications) is almost always better than stopping entirely. You live in Bend — we're not going to bench you if we don't have to.
My knee has been bad for years — is it too late for PT?
No. Chronic knee pain is often undertreated, not untreatable. Even long-standing issues — arthritis, old meniscus injuries, chronic patellar pain — respond well to the right progressive loading program. We've helped people with knee problems lasting years make meaningful, lasting progress.
How is this different from PT I've done before?
Most PT for knee pain is generic — quad sets, straight leg raises, and a theraband. We do individualized, one-on-one treatment that addresses the full lower extremity — hip strength, ankle mobility, movement mechanics — and builds back to the specific demands of your sport. No aides, no cookie-cutter protocols. Just direct care from a Doctor of Physical Therapy who also holds a CSCS.
Do you accept insurance?
We are an out-of-network, cash-pay provider. Many patients use HSA/FSA funds, and we provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Our model means longer appointments, no insurance-driven treatment limits, and care that's designed entirely around what you need — not what an insurance plan will approve.
